  1. A plant that lives in association with a
  2. colony of ants, and possesses specialized
  3. organs in which the ants live. For example,
  4. Myrmecodia, an epiphytic plant from Malaysia,
  5. develops root tubers containing a network of
  6. cavities inhabited by ants. Several species
  7. of Acacia from tropical America have
  8. specialized hollow thorns for the same
  9. purpose. This is probably a mutualistic
  10. (mutually beneficial) relationship, with the
  11. ants helping to protect the plant from other
  12. insect pests and in return receiving shelter.
